Sophie & Alex’s Wedding Portraits in Lake Como, Italy | Destination Wedding Photographer

There are few places that feel quite like Lake Como. The calm water, the historic villas, and the mix of charming streets and open views make it one of the most stunning places to take wedding portraits. If you’re dreaming of getting married or just want to document your love story in a meaningful way, this spot is something special.

As a destination wedding photographer, I’ve had the chance to explore some of the best spots around Lake Como. In this post, I’ll take you behind the scenes of a recent bride and groom portrait session, share tips for planning your own photos here, and answer a few questions couples often ask about getting portraits in this part of Italy.

Why Choose Lake Como for Your Wedding or Portrait Session

Lake Como has this relaxed, timeless feel that adds something extra to every photo. Whether you’re planning an elopement, a full wedding, or just want a set of portraits that feel a little more editorial, the setting does a lot of the work for you.

Some of the most popular locations for photos include:

It’s a mix of grand and intimate. You can get those sweeping water views or tuck away into a quiet corner of an old town square. And of course, one of the most iconic ways to capture the experience? A private boat ride across the lake.

A Bride & Groom Portrait Session in Lake Como

This particular shoot was focused on classic, editorial-style portraits with a laid-back feel.

We started at the Volta Museum, where the clean architecture and lake backdrop made everything feel crisp and modern. The bride wore a gown from Miss He Bridal that moved beautifully in the light breeze, and we kept things simple—lots of walking, holding hands, and small, natural moments.

After that, we made our way toward the Como Cathedral. The cathedral is stunning in person—tons of texture, interesting light, and enough space to move without feeling rushed. It added a bit of structure and history to the gallery without feeling too posed or stiff. The grooms formal tux from Mr. Munro Menswear really stood out against the light stone of the elegant and historic cathedral.

Then we wrapped the session with a boat ride around the southern part of the lake, thanks to Vaba Boats. Even though it wasn’t sunset, the mix of overhead and soft overcast light made for some of my favorite images. There’s something about being out on the water that helps people relax. We captured a lot of candid moments—laughing, quiet conversation, wind in their hair, the kind of stuff that tells the story without needing much direction.

This particular portrait session was all about elegance, intimacy, and the kind of still moments that tell a deeper story.

Tips for Planning Your Lake Como Wedding Photos

Whether you’re planning a full wedding or a dedicated portrait session, here are a few tips to make the most of your time in Lake Como:

1. Timing is everything:

  • Golden hour (early morning or just before sunset) offers the best natural light
  • Avoid high noon when the sun is harsh and the streets are busiest. Midday is doable, but shade and direction become more important

2. Consider the season:

  • Spring (April-May) and early fall (September) offer mild weather and fewer tourists
  • Summer is beautiful, but also peak travel season—be prepared for crowds

3. Location, location, location:

  • Pair iconic backdrops (like the Duomo or Villa del Balbianello) with quieter corners for variety
  • A boat ride is a must for that signature Lake Como feel

4. Plan ahead:

  • Some villas and sites require a permit for professional photography—always check in advance
  • Build in extra time for getting around, especially if you’re relying on ferries or water taxis

5. Keep your vision in mind:

  • Bring inspiration photos, but be open to spontaneity
  • Choose a photographer whose style aligns with the way you want to remember the day

What to Look for in a Destination Wedding Photographer

Choosing the right photographer for a destination like Lake Como isn’t just about checking a box—it’s about trusting someone with your most meaningful memories.

Look for someone who:

  • Has experience shooting in varied light and locations
  • Understands how to blend editorial elegance with genuine emotion
  • Offers support beyond photography—helping with planning, permits, and local logistics
  • Can guide you through poses that feel natural and effortless
  • Makes you feel comfortable, seen, and celebrated throughout the process

I always tell couples: your photographer should be someone you genuinely connect with. It makes all the difference in how your photos feel.

Lake Como Wedding Photography FAQs

How much does a destination wedding photographer in Lake Como cost?

It varies depending on experience, travel, and what’s included. You can expect to pay anywhere from $4,000 to $12,000+. I offer custom packages for destination weddings and portrait sessions.

Is it possible to do a day-before or day-after session in Lake Como?

Yes! If your wedding day is fully booked with events, many couples choose to set aside time the day before or after for portraits in their wedding attire. It takes the pressure off and gives you a slower, more creative experience. Some couples even come just for portraits and engagements.

Some spots (like private villas or historic sites) do require permits. I help walk you through that.

When should we book?

Ideally 9–12 months out if you’re planning during spring or summer.
