How To Plan An Elopement Without The Overwhelm

Weddings are changing, and I love it! Big, traditional celebrations aren’t the only option anymore. More couples are saying “let’s just go” and eloping instead.

And honestly? If you’re the kind of person who lights up at the thought of saying “I do” somewhere bucket-list worthy, surrounded by those closest to you, without all the commotion of a traditional wedding, this might be exactly your speed.

First, let’s weigh it out. Is Eloping Truly Right For You?

Here’s the honest truth about eloping: it’s unforgettable, it’s intimate, the scenery can be jaw-dropping, and you get to make the whole day yours. No one else’s expectations. No seating chart drama. You may even save money depending on where you elope.

But there’s more logistics than you’d think. Travel can throw curveballs, some people you love might not be able to make it, and permit rules are different everywhere you look.

If you’ve read all that and you’re still nodding along, good! Don’t let anything stop you.

Still on the fence? I’m here for you!

Let’s talk through the details together! I’ll help you decide if you eloping is the right decision for you!

5 Tips On Planning An Elopement Without The Overwhelm

1. Start with your priorities, not the destination

Before you even think about where, figure out what actually matters to you. Is it privacy? The scenery? Having a couple of your favorite people there? The location should follow the vision, not the other way around.

Chasing epic views and adventure? Rocky Mountain National Park might be calling your name. Want just the two of you tucked away somewhere stunning? A quiet rental near Lake Como could be it.

Get honest about what you want your elopement to feel like, and the “where” tends to fall into place.

2. Choose somewhere that fits your elopement vision and your real life

Once you know what you want, it’s tempting to just pick the dreamiest spot on Pinterest. I get it. But that gorgeous, far-flung location only works if it actually works.

Make sure you ask yourself the hard questions. Can you get the time off? Will the people you want there be able to swing it? Does the location’s permit process leave room for the marriage license timeline you need? And does the whole thing fit your budget once you factor in travel?

It’s easy to fall in love with a photo. Just make sure the logistics can keep up with the daydream.

3. Let experts help carry the weight of planning your elopement

If there’s one thing I’d tell every couple it’s to hire people who have done this before.  Elopement photographers and planners can work with you to navigate the small details, make the right choices, and guide the timeline of your day.  Local vendors, planners, and location experts already know the best spots, the permit headaches, and the rules nobody warns you about.

You don’t have to figure it all out yourself! The right team takes things off your plate and lets you actually be in the moment for your elopement instead of managing a spreadsheet.

When the big day comes, all you should have to worry about is saying “I do.”

I’ve helped couples plan elopments from a boat in Lake Como, Italy to an intmate escape at the Maroon Bells, Colorado. Bringing your elopement vision to life is one of my favorite parts of the job!

4. Keep your elopement guest list intentional

This one’s tough, I won’t sugarcoat it. So many people have shaped your relationship, and narrowing down that list can feel impossible.

When you’re stuck, ask yourself: would I actually notice if this person wasn’t there? Can I be completely myself around them? Does thinking about inviting them stress me out more than it excites me?

Start from the heart, not the obligation list. The logistics will sort themselves out.

5. Let go of “perfect” and just be in it

I get it, this is the biggest day of your life, and you want it to go exactly right. But the magic of eloping isn’t in the flawless plan, it’s in the experience.

There will probably be a hiccup or two. That’s not what you’ll remember. What sticks is the quiet moment right before you say your vows, the laugh you shared when something went sideways, the feeling of just being there with the person you love.

Now more than ever, couples are choosing celebrations that actually feel like them, and I’m here for it.

If you’re dreaming of an elopement, don’t let the logistics talk you out of it! With the right planning (and the right people in your corner), it can be just as smooth as it is unforgettable. Whether that’s just the two of you on a mountaintop, or a handful of your favorite people at a micro-wedding, there’s no single “right” way to get married.

It’s possible, it’s doable, and honestly? You’ve got this.

And when you’re ready to make it official? I’d love to capture every unforgettable moment.
